Sixteen-Channel D1 DVR
with Centralized Management System

The DVR is the central controller of the video security system.  The module is more than just a replacement for the VCR.  The DVR is a dedicated purpose computer than can apply logic and integrate the system with the rest of your world via the computer network and Internet.  For DVR systems with many cameras, the Centralized Management Systems allows many DVR to be utilized with a single software portal.

Xenon is an emerging star in the field of Video Security hardware.  Xenon makes a full line of high-quality digital video recorders (DVR).

This is the 16 channel version of their DVR with h.264 encoding, which greatly increases the efficiency of video data storage (h.264 is also used with Blu-Ray DVD).  The DVR includes support for 2 internal SATA hard drives (max 2 TB) and/or a recordable CD drive.

The DVR design includes an embedded microprocessor running a uClinux (pronounced “you see linux”) operating system.  The firmware is burned into flash memory, making it more stable and reliable than software programs running from a standard hard disk drive.   Software for managing large installations with multiple DVR systems, called “Centralized Management System” (CMS), is part of the package.  Data can be archived either over the network or over a USB (1.1) port.

These systems can playback 16 channels simultaneously, making review of video much more productive.  For example, if we were reviewing video from a hotel, we could synchronize the playback channels to watch a hallways, elevator exits, the lobby, and finally the parking lot cameras.  In this way we could monitor the travel of an individual through the facility.  Try this job with single channel playback.

Centralized Management System

The Xenon DVR family is equipped software to link with a Centralized Management System (CMS) which facilitates the integration of the unit into a larger monitoring system, up to 200 channels.  The capabilities include centralized control and management functions. This provides a global view and maintenance of your video equipment.   CMS, an Industry standard protocol which enables multi-vendor system integration, is a highly sophisticated system with an easy-to-use graphical user interface and intelligent features allowing managment of  multiple sites across a wide geographic area.  Multiple security modules are now centrally monitored.  This can reduce travel expense,  and remove obstacles to an efficient utilization of your security assets.

A VGA output for connecting to a local monitor is included.  Many installations will not need a local monitor except during startup and troubleshooting, since most functions can be accessed over a network.  The speed of record and playback (NTSC) is 10 frames per second (FPS) per channel when utilizing D1 resolution.  D1 resolution is necessary to fully utilize high resolution cameras.

The systems are equipped with sophisticated motion detection.  The software allows you to define active sensing regions of the viewing area (divided into 64 cells), and the control of sensitivity.  If, for example, a camera is monitoring a room at a time of day when there should not be any activity, if the camera detects changes in the scene, the DVR can automatically send an email and/or close a relay which could be used to activate an alarm.  Motion detection triggered recording is also included, greatly increasing the efficiency of the storage in some environments.

The DVR family is fully “web enabled”, allowing you to view the data through Internet Explorer (currently Firefox and Safari browsers are not ActiveX capable, preventing compatibility) or a web enabled mobile device.  The Xenon interface allows control of most of the DVR functions, as opposed to some alternative DVR interfaces, which only allow monitoring of data, often not even allowing backup of data over the network.
